X Music by the Sea Cycle
The X Music by the Sea Cycle is a series of outdoor concerts held in Oliva. The program features a range of music genres and takes place in the Plaza Europa.
The cycle has been running since late July. The listing closes it on 21 August, but the programme it carries includes a performance on the 22nd, so that detail is worth confirming on the official page. From what is published, what remains is the Grupo de Danzas Raval i Vila at 19:30 on 22 August. The earlier dates have passed: the summer concert by the AAMO symphonic band on 31 July, the Coral Santa Cecilia on 2 August in the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, and the MEGòC gospel choir on 7 August.
What kind of event this is
The main stage is Plaza de Europa in Oliva, outdoors, with one act moved into a village church. This is local music in the best sense: town bands, choirs and folk dance groups from the district. Spain's bandas — amateur wind orchestras attached to a town's music society — are the backbone of musical life in the Valencia region, and a summer concert by one is a very ordinary, very local thing to attend. The listing gives no price; check the official page for whether entry is free or ticketed.
Getting to Oliva without a car
Oliva is a bit over 70 km south of València, in La Safor, and has no railway station. The Cercanías commuter train runs as far as Gandia, and the last stretch is by bus. Doable as a day trip, but with an evening concert you must check the last return before committing. See reaching the villages without a car.
Make a day of it
Come down early. Oliva beach is one of the longest and least built-up on the Valencian coast, and the old town on the hillside is a tangle of narrow lanes climbing to the Santa Anna castle. Beach in the afternoon, dinner around 21:00, concert after — that is the order that works in August, when nothing outdoors starts early because of the heat. Other summer series are in summer festivals near València.
