The Castell d'Artana preserves the remains of a medieval fortress, some of whose elements are attributed a Roman origin. Vestiges from the Arab and Christian periods are visible on the site, which points to a long occupation of the place. During the Carlist wars the castle was blown up, so today mainly stretches of wall and defensive structures survive. That destruction explains the fragmentary appearance of the site and the difficulty of reconstructing its full plan. Even so, the remains make it possible to recognise the characteristic elements of a fortification and to trace the cultures that used it.
