Castell de la Granadella

The Castell de la Granadella is a horseshoe-shaped coastal fort from 1739 that watches over the Cala de la Granadella from above. It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1996, and the climb to it is one of the classic walks in Xàbia.
A bit of history
It was the last fortification raised on the Xàbia coast, conceived as a battery against the pirate raids that harried this shore. Its military life ended at the close of the Peninsular War, when the English bombarded it and left it in ruins. What you see today are those walls, recovered on the clifftop.

From the fort the view drops straight onto the cove and its turquoise water, with the coastline opening to the south. It is a first-rate viewpoint for understanding why the sea had to be watched from here.
