Castillo de Sagunto

The Castle of Sagunto sits on the hill above the old town. Less than half an hour from the capital, in the Camp de Morvedre region, this large fortified enclosure stretches along the hilltop. Its Iberian and Roman origins show in every wall, and admission is free.

History

The castle occupies a strategic position that has been fortified since antiquity. Of Iberian and Roman origin, the enclosure was reused and expanded over the centuries, which is why walls, squares and remains from different periods sit side by side along the ridge. At the foot of the fortress is a Roman theatre, a notable archaeological site in the area.

What to see

The enclosure is large and is explored by following the line of the hill, from one walled space to the next. From the top you can see the Mediterranean and the surrounding huerta (market gardens), a view worth the climb.

• Walk through the old town and the nearby Jewish quarter before or after going up.
• Combine your visit with the Roman theatre at the foot of the hill.

Tips for your visit

• Wear comfortable shoes: the terrain is uneven with several slopes.
• Avoid the middle of the day in summer; there is little shade.
• Go up in late afternoon, when the light works best for the views.
