Teatro Romano de Sagunto

Carved into the hillside just below Sagunto castle, the Roman Theatre is part of the monumental core of the Camp de Morvedre. Built in the 1st century, it makes use of the slope of the hill in the classic Roman way, and it was the first monument declared of national interest in Spain, in 1896. It remains a living space today: every summer it fills with audiences once more to host performances under the sky of ancient Saguntum.

History

The theatre follows the classic Roman model, with the seating tiers (the cavea) cut into the slope so that spectators enjoyed a natural panorama. Its early official recognition in 1896 made it a landmark in the story of heritage conservation in Spain, and its long life has cemented it as a symbol of the region's Roman legacy.

What to see

The first thing that strikes you is the acoustics: a voice projected from the stage carries clearly up to the highest rows. From the top, the views over Sagunto and its surroundings open out, with the castle crowning the hill right above.

Visiting tips

• Admission is free.
• In summer there are open-air performances; check the programme and experience the theatre in use.
• Combine it with the climb up to the castle right above; wear sturdy shoes for the slope.
• Avoid the hottest hours and bring water, as the tiers are very exposed.
