Comunidad de Pescadores de El Palmar
One of the most venerable fishermen's communities of l'Albufera, officially constituted in 1857 on a far older fishing tradition that goes back to Jaume I's 1250 privilege allowing people to fish in the lake. It meets in a handsome building raised in the 1920s on Calle Caudete, whose hall hosts the «Sorteig de Redolins» each July, the lottery that assigns the fixed fishing posts. It is said that Blasco Ibáñez wrote part of 'Cañas y barro' on the presidential table still kept here.
The right to fish in l'Albufera comes from a privilege Jaume I granted in 1250, and the Comunidad de Pescadores de El Palmar is the living heir of that concession. It was formally constituted in 1857 and meets in a building raised in the 1920s on Calle Caudete, inside l'Albufera natural park.
The Sorteig de Redolins
Every July the hall of the headquarters draws the redolins: the fixed fishing posts shared out among the members for the next twelve months. Each redolí is a wooden ball holding a slip with a fisherman's name; whoever is drawn first picks the best spot. It is one of the village's oldest events and explains how the lake has been parcelled out for centuries.
