Estany del Pujol

El Palmar — Albufera de València

An artificial lake dug in the early 1970s within the Devesa for a marina that was never built; after being abandoned it has re-wilded into a wetland rich in flora and waterbirds. Lying close to the Gola del Pujol, it is a quiet corner of the natural park, ideal for birdwatching and a stroll among dunes and Mediterranean pinewood. It pairs well with a visit to the viewpoint and the beaches of the Devesa del Saler.

The Estany del Pujol was born of a project that was never finished: an artificial lake dug in the early 1970s within the Devesa for a marina that stayed on paper. Once the work was abandoned, nature reclaimed the ground, and today it is a wetland of l'Albufera natural park, in the municipality of El Palmar.

A re-wilded wetland

Over the years the basin —which in places reaches four metres deep— has filled with flora and waterbirds and turned into a quiet, little-trodden corner. Dunes and Mediterranean pinewood ring it, the landscape of the Devesa del Saler, ideal for a short walk and for birdwatching.

How to fit it in

It sits very close to the Gola del Pujol and the Devesa beaches, so all three fit into a single outing. It's a free, open-air plan, perfect for a day escape from València.
