Iglesia de Santa Clara (Convento de las Clarisas)

The Royal Monastery of Santa Clara is one of the oldest conventual complexes in Gandia. Linked since the Middle Ages to the Poor Clare nuns and to the patronage of the city's dukes, it offers visitors an intimate journey into medieval and Renaissance spirituality, away from the bustle of the centre.

History

The Poor Clares settled here in medieval times and, over the centuries, the monastery became closely tied to the ducal house. Within its walls the community remembers María Enríquez, wife of the second Duke of Gandia, who withdrew here to convent life and left a deep mark on its memory.

The complex safeguards religious art gathered over its long history. The church and its quarters keep the secluded atmosphere of an enclosed monastery, with sober spaces that breathe medieval and Renaissance spirituality.
