Cava de Don Miquel
An imposing 17th-century snow well (cava) deep in the Serra de Mariola, within Bocairent's boundary very close to the limits with Alfafara and Agres. As it sits on bare rock it could not be dug out, so it was built up with eight huge stone buttresses holding its walls. About 15 m across and around 10 m deep, it is one of the most spectacular snow wells in the range.
Here the rock made it impossible to dig the snow well, so in the 17th century they did the opposite: built upward, resting the walls on eight huge stone buttresses. That solution shaped the Cava de Don Miquel, in the Serra de Mariola, within the Bocairent boundary and very close to the limits with Alfafara and Agres.
How it worked
It measures about 15 metres across and around 10 metres deep. In winter snow was pressed in layers; in summer that ice went down to the towns of the valley to keep food and make cold drinks. It was a trade that held up the mountain economy for generations.
The setting
It stands deep in the range, among pine woods, and is almost always reached on foot along routes that link several snow wells. It fits a day trip from València if you want to mix history with the mountains.
