The Castell de Morella is the fortress crowning the rocky crag the town sits on, perched at the very top of the rock. From its walls the view sweeps across the whole skyline of Morella and the rugged country of the Els Ports district, in the mountainous interior of northern Castellón. The climb is demanding, but the panoramas make it worth the trip up.

What to see

You reach it by a ramp that hugs the mountainside and climbs gradually to the main quarters. At the top you'll find the Governor's Palace and a cluster of spaces that speak to daily life inside the fortress: the cisterns dug to store water, the old bakery and the former prison. Every corner opens a different angle over the walled town and the surrounding landscape.

Tips for your visit

Wear comfortable shoes with good grip: the ramp is steep and the surface can be slippery.
Bring water and, in summer, sun protection; there is little shade up top.
Climb up late in the day to catch the golden light over the district.
Combine it with a stroll through Morella's historic centre at the foot of the castle.
