In Morella's old town, the Archpriestal Basilica of Santa María la Mayor dates from the Valencian Gothic period of the 13th to 15th century. Its stone bulk presides over the walled town and, together with the castle, shapes the village's silhouette on the rock. It helps explain the medieval importance of Els Ports.

History

The basilica was built over the centuries of medieval splendour and belongs to the Valencian Gothic tradition: vertical lines, pointed arches and the sobriety of dressed stone. The work stretched across generations, which accounts for the richness of its sculptural detail.

The first thing to catch the eye is the pair of carved portals:

Inside, the raised choir loft is a surprise, reached by a sculpted spiral staircase, next to the Baroque organ of more than 3,000 pipes.
