Convent de Sant Francesc

At the foot of the climb up to the castle, the Convent de Sant Francesc surprises visitors who come to Morella expecting only the fortress. It's a former Franciscan convent of medieval origin that keeps the sobriety of pure Gothic style, and today it's visited together with the castle, on the same ticket.

History

The complex dates from the medieval period, when the mendicant orders settled alongside the great walled towns. You can still feel that Franciscan austerity here: bare stone, straight lines and a restrained Gothic style, with no decorative flourishes, built for prayer and community life. Its position, right next to the entrance to the castle, made it an inseparable part of the fortified complex from early on.

What to see

Its standout feature is the Dance of Death, an uncommon medieval fresco in the chapter house. This depiction, in which death levels every social rank, was a familiar theme across Europe at the time, though today it's a rare survival.

• Look at the plainness of the arches and vaults in the cloister and the conventual halls.
• The Dance of Death is the highlight of the visit, so take your time in front of it.

• It's entered on the same castle ticket, so combine both sights in a single climb.
• The route has slopes and stone paving, so wear comfortable shoes.
• Afterwards, head down to walk through the historic centre of Morella.
