Patio de los Silos (Les Sitges de Burjassot)

In 1573 workers began cutting the first shafts of the Patio de los Silos into the rock of a low hill in Burjassot, an underground granary built to keep the wheat that fed the city of Valencia through bad harvests. It is one of the most unexpected things to see near València.

What you see above and below

The upper terrace is paved with the stone caps of the silos themselves, and dozens of circular mouths open up across it. Of the forty-seven original silos, forty-one survive. Guided visits let you climb down into several of them and see how grain was ventilated and kept underground for months at a time.

Planning a visit

• Entry is free on the guided open days.
• The complex was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1982.
• A quirk worth knowing: although the silos sit in Burjassot, they belong to the City of Valencia.

It stands right beside the Ermita de Sant Roc, so you can take in both in a single morning.
