Parc Natural de la Serra d'Irta

The Serra d'Irta Natural Park protects more than 7,700 hectares between the mountains and the sea, right next to Peñíscola in the Baix Maestrat region of Castellón. It takes in 12 kilometres of unspoilt, almost undeveloped coastline, where cliffs drop straight into the Mediterranean and hidden coves shelter crystal-clear water. It is one of the few stretches of the Valencian coast that still looks much as it did centuries ago.

What to see

The park's landmark is the Torre Badum, an old watchtower perched high on the cliff and gazing out over the sea. The view across the Mediterranean from here is immense. Below, pebble and sand coves follow one another between pine woods and Mediterranean scrub, good for a quiet swim away from the crowds.

Walking and cycling routes

Serra d'Irta is made to be explored slowly. Its forest tracks and footpaths suit both walking and mountain biking, through the hills and the clifftop viewpoints over the sea.

• Access on foot is free: a nature escape at no cost.
• Bring water, a hat and good footwear; there is little shade along the coastal stretches.
• Respect the protected setting and leave no trace.
