Peñíscola

Peñíscola is a walled town perched on a rocky headland surrounded by the sea, in the Castelló district of Baix Maestrat, just over an hour and a half from València. Its old quarter of steep white streets, looking out over the blue of the Mediterranean, is crowned by the castle where Pope Luna lived.

History

The great highlight is the castle of Templar origin standing at the highest point of the headland. It was the residence of Pope Luna (Benedict XIII), which forever links Peñíscola to a singular episode of medieval history. The fortress, with its plain lines and stone walls, dominates the town and the sea from a virtually impregnable position.

• The Pope Luna castle and its views over the coast.
• The maze of white alleyways in the old quarter, within the walls.
• The viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean from the top of the headland.
• The seafront promenade and beaches, easy to combine with the old town.

• Wear comfortable shoes: the old-town streets are steep with uneven paving.
• Go early or late in the day to avoid the summer heat and crowds.
• Set aside time to wander the lanes without a fixed route.
