Salinas de Calp
41 hectare former saltpan in the town centre, with 173 bird species, flamingos and black-winged stilts.
The Calp saltpans cover 41.08 hectares inside the town itself, beside the Penyal d'Ifac Nature Park: the remains of the old bay that joined the rock to the coast. 173 bird species have been recorded, with pink flamingo groups of several hundred birds and the common black-winged stilt.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best times for birds, and flamingos show in good numbers. It is a short visit, an hour and a half at a calm pace, done on foot around urban Calp: no car is needed once there. Bring binoculars if you have them and water in summer.
How to see them
There is no entry system: it is a free stop that combines with the Ifac climb or another coast plan. Keep your distance from the banks where the birds rest and leave no litter. Come at sunrise or sunset, when the birds are most active and the light is best. Bring repellent on warm afternoons by the water.
