An archaeological site atop the hill that closes Poniente beach, declared a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC) in 2023. Excavations by the University of Alicante have identified a 1st-century-BC Roman castellum (fort) linked to the forces of Quintus Sertorius during the Sertorian Wars. Beyond the wall and room foundations, it offers one of the finest views over the bay, with Puig Campana rising in the background.

In 2023 the site was declared a Cultural Heritage Asset (BIC). The Tossal de la Cala occupies the hill that closes Poniente beach, and excavations by the University of Alicante uncovered a Roman castellum from the 1st century BC, the oldest archaeological remains in Benidorm.

A little history

The fort is linked to the forces of Quintus Sertorius during the Sertorian Wars, when this rebel general fought Rome in 1st-century-BC Hispania. You can still make out stretches of wall and the foundations of several rooms; coins, pottery and weapon fragments turned up among them.

What to see

The climb pays off for the views too: from the top you take in the whole bay, with the outline of Puig Campana behind it. It is one of the city's least crowded lookouts. To carry on with local history, the Museu Boca del Calvari sits in the centre.
