Around 4500 BC someone painted archers, wild goats and a woman in a wide skirt onto this wall above the right bank of the Río Grande. The Abrigo del Garrofero keeps that hunting scene within the municipality of Navarrés, about 70 km from València, and ranks among the finest rock-art sites in the Canal de Navarrés.

What you see on the rock

The art, Levantine and Schematic, is spread across five zones, with close to thirty figures still legible. Salvador Gómez Vellot found it in 1972, and in 1998 it joined the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the rock art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.

Visiting

This is an open-air natural site with free access, set along the Río Grande. The paintings are fragile and protected behind a grille, so respect the barrier and don't touch the rock. The Peña Sansón lies close by if you want to stretch the walk.
