The Castle of Santa Bárbara is a medieval fortress perched atop Mount Benacantil, 166 metres above the sea. It dominates the skyline of Alacant: the city sits below, along with the harbour, the sweep of the beaches and the open blue of the Mediterranean. Entry is free.

History

The castle grew over the centuries as a defensive stronghold, thanks to its raised position above the sea. The walls, bastions and courtyards belong to different phases of fortification, and it shows as you move through the levels, from the highest, oldest sections down to the lower terraces.
