Iglesia de Sant Pere Apóstol

The Church of Sant Pere Apóstol stands in the old quarter of Canet d'en Berenguer, a small town in the Camp de Morvedre just a step from the coast. It's an 18th-century Baroque church, built between 1747 and 1762, with a plain salmon-coloured façade and a figure of Sant Pere crowning the doorway. Inside that plain exterior lies a history longer than it looks.

History

The current church dates from the height of Valencian Baroque, a period when many towns rebuilt their parish churches. The surprise came with recent digs: beneath the building and beside it, archaeologists found 18th-century graffiti along with Roman and medieval remains, evidence the site was already inhabited long before the Baroque church went up.

Visiting tips

Admission is free, though it's worth checking service times before you go. As in most small towns, mid-morning or late afternoon is the quietest time to visit. Pair it with a swim at the nearby Canet beach or a walk out to the Canet lighthouse; there are more free things to do in the area.
