Capilla gótica del Castillo del Papa Luna

At the very top of the old town of Peñíscola, inside the 13th-century Templar fortress that became one of only three papal seats in history, a plain Gothic chapel survives. It occupies the north wing of the parade ground and is one of the most moving spaces for anyone exploring the Papa Luna castle: it was here that Benedict XIII prayed during his long retreat by the sea.

History

The castle was raised by the Templars in the 13th century on the rock that crowns the town. Centuries later it became the residence of the Papa Luna, the Aragonese pope Benedict XIII, who held his court here when the Western Schism left him isolated. This chapel was the intimate space of his prayer, which lends every stone a story rarely found elsewhere in Europe.

What to see

The chapel measures roughly 20 by 7 metres and is covered by an elegant pointed barrel vault, an austere and refined example of Templar Gothic. Do not look for ornate decoration here: its strength lies in the bare stone, the balanced proportions and the restrained light that filters in from the courtyard.

• Reaching the site means tackling the slopes and steps of the old town: wear comfortable shoes.
