Macastre

A castle on top of a hill overlooking the town, with a Roman origin and an Islamic built complex from the 11th century, remodelled in the 14th. It had strategic importance because of its border position between the kingdoms of Valencia and Castile. It keeps walls and two towers, the largest at the western end. It has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1949.

The Castillo de Macastre stands at the top of a hill overlooking the town. The Islamic complex was built around the 11th century, with Christian works from the 14th century. It keeps two towers, and the one at the western end is the largest and best preserved. It has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1949. The elevated position and the presence of those two towers make it possible to recognise the defensive organisation of the enclosure and its value within the landscape. The castle crowns the hill and keeps the main tower as the visual reference of the complex.
