Casco Antiguo de Buñol
The neighborhood, with its narrow, steep streets, has developed around the Castillo since medieval times. During the summers of 1890–1895, Joaquín Sorolla painted here while staying at the old inn Venta Pilar.
The town of Buñol has grown since the Middle Ages around its castle, forming an old neighbourhood of narrow streets that climb the slope: the so‑called Barrio del Castillo, which preserves almost intact its original layout.
These same streets attracted the painter Joaquín Sorolla, who spent several summers in Buñol between 1890 and 1895, staying at the old inn Venta Pilar. From that period came three paintings depicting the town, among them Calle de Buñol, set in a street of the very Barrio del Castillo.
The old town ends at the Plaza del Pueblo, where every year the tomato battle of La Tomatina begins: the rest of the year it is a quiet square, with the Church of San Pedro Apóstol presiding over one of its sides.
