Monestir de Santa Maria de Benifassà
Gothic building constructed in the 13th century to the north-east of the Santa Escolástica hill, with work from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. In 1233 James I ordered a monastery to be built under the dedication of Saint Mary, after the territory had been donated to the Cistercian order.
The Monestir de Santa Maria de Benifassà is a Gothic building constructed in the 13th century, to which works from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries were added. In 1229, Guillem de Cervera donated the territory to the Cistercian order, and four years later, in 1233, James I ordered the monastery to be built under the dedication of Saint Mary. The sequence of these two events explains the link between the donation of the land and the founding of the religious building. The original Gothic fabric was completed by later interventions over three centuries, so the complex shows the passage of different construction phases on a single plan. The result is a religious building whose chronology runs from the 13th to the 16th century.
