Paratge Natural Municipal Parpalló-Borrell
Municipal nature reserve of some 560 ha in Gandia's mountains, protected by the Generalitat since 2004, with trails, pinewoods and an interpretation centre. Within it opens the Cova del Parpalló, one of the most important Upper Palaeolithic sites in Europe: a prehistoric sanctuary that has yielded over 6,000 engraved and painted stone plaques. The cave, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, is visited with a guide from the interpretation centre.
The Paratge Natural Municipal Parpalló-Borrell has protected some 560 hectares of the Gandia mountains since 2004, with trails, pinewoods and an interpretation centre. But its greatest treasure lies underground, in Gandia.
A Palaeolithic sanctuary
Within it opens the Cova del Parpalló, one of the most important Upper Palaeolithic sites in Europe. From this prehistoric sanctuary over 6,000 stone plaques engraved and painted with animals and signs have been recovered, a body of portable art that makes it a world reference. The cave is a declared Asset of Cultural Interest.
How to visit
The inside of the cave is toured with a guide setting out from the interpretation centre; it is worth checking times and booking ahead. On the surface, the trails through Aleppo pine invite an easy walk. To see the original Parpalló finds, head afterwards to the Museu Arqueològic (MAGa) in the town centre. Nature and prehistory in a single day, a little over an hour from València.
