Xàtiva

Xàtiva lies about 60 km from València, in the La Costera district. It is a town of stately streets, fountains and palaces, known as the birthplace of the Borgia popes. The old quarter spreads out at the foot of a double fortress that crowns the mountain and looks out over the surrounding farmland.

History

Xàtiva is one of the most distinguished towns of the Valencian interior. The passage of different cultures over the centuries left its mark on the street layout and the architecture, and the town still keeps the aristocratic air that earned it the name of noble town. The memory of the Borgia family, which gave two popes to Christendom, remains a source of strong local pride.

What to see

The main draw is the double fortress that crowns the mountain, where wide views open up over the town and its orchards. Below, the old quarter invites an unhurried walk among fountains, squares and stately façades, with the collegiate church as its landmark.
