Castell de Xàtiva

The Castle of Xàtiva crowns the mountain that towers over the town and its fertile plain, in La Costera. It is not one fortress but two: the Castell Menor, with Ibero-Roman roots, and the medieval Castell Major. Climbing through its walls, towers and courtyards means crossing more than two thousand years of history, with the Costera plain spread out at your feet.

History

The site sums up the succession of peoples who have lived on this land. The Castell Menor preserves the oldest, Ibero-Roman origins, while the Castell Major reflects the medieval fortification that protected the town. The different eras can be read in the stone as you make your way up the enclosure.

• Go early in the morning or late afternoon; in summer the climb and the walls take the full force of the sun.
• Wear comfortable shoes and bring water; the route up the hill is demanding.
• Pair the visit with the Collegiate church (Seu) of Xàtiva and the old town.
