Antic Quarter dels Carabiners (Centre Cívic de la Platja)
In the early 20th century a carabineros barracks was raised beside the beach, on the old sandflats of 'Els borrons', to watch over and protect the coast: a harmonious building despite its military purpose, with solid walls, a rectangular plan and a hipped tiled roof. After decades of neglect it was restored and, since June 2010, houses the Civic Centre of Xeraco beach, at the southern end of the seafront, given over to exhibitions and cultural activities.

The building
Despite its military origin, its lines are plain and balanced: solid walls, a rectangular plan and a hipped tiled roof. The carabineros were the corps in charge of border patrol and the control of smuggling, and placing it right in front of the sand was no accident.
From barracks to civic centre
After decades of neglect it was restored and, since June 2010, it houses the Civic Centre of Xeraco beach, with exhibitions and cultural activities mainly through the summer season. It makes a quick, free stop on the way to or from the beach.
