Ermita de Sant Josep

The Ermita de Sant Josep is a small Baroque chapel from the late 18th century, built by the carpenters' guild of Xàtiva. Its white façade, simple and well proportioned, stands out in the late afternoon, when warm light picks out its silhouette in the old town. It sits right on the symbolic frontier between the former Muslim medina and the Christian city, beside the first walled enclosure.

History

The hermitage is evidence of the guild devotion that flourished in Valencian towns during the Baroque period. Local carpenters promoted it. They chose a site rich in symbolism, on the boundary between the city's two historic cores. Its modest scale and careful craftsmanship reflect the pride of a trade that wanted to leave its mark on the urban fabric.
