La Fábrica de Hielo

La Fábrica de Hielo (The Ice Factory) is the creative soul of El Cabanyal. A former port ice factory, today turned into an independent cultural space where something happens almost every day: concerts, markets, exhibitions, workshops, film, dance, talks. With its bar, its raffish atmosphere and its all-ages crowd, it's a good gateway into the cultural scene of the seafaring district.

From ice factory to cultural space

The building was built to supply ice to the Cabanyal's fishing boats, essential for keeping fish fresh in an age without refrigerators. In the 1950s it became a naval workshop, and after years of neglect it was reborn as a creative hub. Today it keeps its industrial character: high ceilings, bare walls, the feel of a dockside warehouse, as the backdrop for a programme that keeps changing.

Practical tips

It's on Calle Pavía, a step from the sand. Get there by tram or metro to the Cabanyal and then walk. The programme changes constantly, so it's worth checking the events agenda before you go. Many activities are free or charge a token price.
