Capella del Crist (Capilla del Cristo)

Attached to the church of Sant Roc in the heart of Oliva's old town, the Capella del Crist is a small Baroque gem raised between 1725 and 1749. It guards the venerated image of the Most Holy Christ and ranks among the most remarkable Baroque painted ensembles in the town, making it an essential stop for anyone wandering the streets of Oliva's historic centre.

History and architecture

Built in the first half of the 18th century, the chapel stands out for its unusual Greek-cross plan, a relatively rare layout that gives the space a striking sense of balance and centrality. The whole reflects the Baroque taste of the period, in which architecture serves as the framework for an ambitious painted decorative scheme.

What to see

The star of the chapel is the painted cycle covering the interior. The central dome, painted by Lorenzo Chafrión, depicts the evangelists and the Fathers of the Church, while the walls bear murals attributed to followers of Joseph Llàcer, devoted to the glory of the risen Christ. At the centre of it all is the image of the Most Holy Christ, the focus of local devotion.
