Castillo de Chulilla

The Castle of Chulilla sits on a rocky crag above the village, overlooking the loop the River Turia carves at its feet. It is of Muslim origin: the fortress was built to make full use of the hill's natural defences, a stronghold characteristic of the Los Serranos district. Today it has been restored and entry is free.

History

The fortress has its roots in the Andalusi period, when the site was chosen for its strategic value: a virtually impregnable crag above the river's course. Over the centuries it was reworked and adapted, and it kept the character of the rock-built castles typical of the Valencian interior, where the living rock forms part of the walls themselves.

The main draw is the views: from the top you can see the Turia canyon, the old town and the lookouts around it.
