Paraje Natural Municipal Los Calderones
A protected natural area declared in 2007 covering some 538 hectares of the Turia river gorges, where the water has carved a spectacular canyon with vertical limestone walls over 80 m high. It is one of the best-preserved natural corners of the Valencia region and takes in the Charco Azul, the Salto and the famous pantaneros trail with its hanging bridges.
Declared a Municipal Natural Area in 2007, Los Calderones protects some 538 hectares of the Turia river gorges as they cut past Chulilla, in the Los Serranos county. It is the village's great natural space and the one that holds almost everything people come here to see.
The canyon
The water has carved a defile of vertical limestone walls that pass 80 metres in places. Those same walls are one of the best climbing grounds in the Valencia region, with hundreds of bolted routes that fill the village with climbers in autumn and spring.
What it takes in
Three essential spots sit inside the area and link up in a single day of walking: the Charco Azul, the narrows of the Salto, and the pantaneros trail with its hanging bridges. Just over 60 km from València, it is one of the most rewarding nature escapes near the city.
