High in the old town of Chulilla, at the top of the village square and the foot of the castle, stands the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles. The bell tower rises above the rooftops and acts as a landmark, helping visitors find their way through the steep lanes climbing the hillside.

History

The church, Gothic in feel, was built over a former medieval mosque, a trace of the Andalusi past found in many villages of the Valencian interior. The bell tower, dating from the 18th century, was added later and gives the building its distinctive vertical profile, visible from much of the old town.

What to see

The interior is plain and intimate, and holds a Baroque altarpiece worth pausing for. From outside, the bell tower is what draws the eye, especially at dusk.
