Mercat Central de València

Mercado €€

València — Plaça del Mercat, Ciutat Vella

One of Europe's largest fresh-produce markets, in a dazzling modernist building of iron, glass and ceramics with nearly a thousand stalls. Fruit, cured meats, day-boat fish and counters to snack at: the temple of the Valencian pantry and a must for any food lover.

💡 Local tip: Go in the morning (it closes mid-afternoon and on Sundays); grab a tapa at Central Bar right inside the market.

Mercat Central is, above all, the place where Valencians who cook seriously shop: almost a thousand stalls under the modernist domes that were completed in 1928 (the building's profile tells that story in more detail).

To eat, the best thing is to go from stall to stall: ham cut at the moment, fresh seafood in the fishmongers and cheeses from all over the Comunitat, or a mid-morning vermut at any of its bars. Inside is also Central Bar, Ricard Camarena's bar that uses products from the market itself.

It opens in the mornings and closes in the early afternoons; on Sundays it is closed, so do not leave the visit for the last day.
